Naturalization & Citizenship

How to Obtain Citizenship in the United States

Have you resided in the United States as a green card holder for many years? Are you looking to take the next step and obtain the benefits of U.S. citizenship? If so, you will need to undergo the naturalization process. United States citizenship can only be obtained through birth or through naturalization, so hire a North Carolina immigration attorney right away for the counsel you need to successfully navigate the process of citizenship through naturalization.

Eligibility for Citizenship

Before you can pursue citizenship, you must meet certain criteria. You must be at least 18 at the time of filing and have resided continuously in the United States for at least 5 years, having been physically present in the country for at least 30 months of those 5 years prior to applying. You must also have been a lawful permanent resident for at least five years before applying and have resided for at least three months in the state in which you are applying prior to application. You must be able to read, write, and speak English, and you must be a person of good moral character. If you meet these requirements, then you can take the first step in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen.

Overview of the Naturalization Process

If you are eligible to become a naturalized citizen, you need to retain an immigration attorney immediately to help you complete and submit your application and prepare for the citizenship interview and naturalization test. The first step is to complete the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization and submit it to your local U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) Lockbox Facility or Service Center, along with two passport-style photographs and certain required documents. Once the USCIS receives your application, they will schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. Once you've been fingerprinted and submitted any additional documentation requested by the USCIS, they will schedule your interview and citizenship tests.

The naturalization interview, English test, and civics test are the most important - and typically unnerving - steps in the citizenship process. You must bring your state ID, green card, and other necessary documents and answer questions about your application, your background, and your character. After your interview, you must take an English test and a civics test to evaluate your ability to read, write, and comprehend English, as well as your understanding of U.S. history. If you do not pass the first time, you will have one more opportunity to take the tests at a later date and pass. Once you pass, you will receive a ceremony date to take the Oath of Allegiance and finalize your status as a United States citizen.
